Welcome to the History San José Research Library. Most of
our holdings are unique; no other copies exist. We try to handle them
with great care in order to preserve them as long as possible. Unlike
a circulating library, materials in our collections must be examined
in the Research Library. The stacks are not open to patrons. You can
discuss your needs with our staff and use our finding aids and card
files to locate items you wish to see. Staff will bring these items to
the reading room for your viewing. Note taking may be done freely (with
pencils), and photocopying can also be done with some items. Material
that has been microfilmed for preservation reasons are available for
study in microform only.
In order to insure the safety of the research library and
prevent misunderstandings, we ask you to read and sign this patron
agreement:
I agree to treat the research library and all of its contents with
respect. I recognize these materials are held in trust for future
generations and will handle all items with care. Specifically I will
not alter, damage or remove any object.
I agree not to smoke, eat or drink in the Research Library. I
also agree not to use pens or other permanent markers in the research
library and that operation of hand copiers, tape recorders, scanners,
or cameras is forbidden without written permission of HSJ staff. History
San José assumes no responsibility for your personal belongings
while at the Research Library.
I understand that all unpublished writings, images or other creative
works held in the research library are subject to copyright law and that
obtaining permission to publish any portion of these materials is solely
my responsibility. All necessary permissions will be obtained by the
user before any publication occurs. No manuscript materials of History
San José will be published or reproduced in any form without prior
authorization of History San José. Please refer to the Request for
Permission to Publish or Exhibit form.
The user will respect the unpublished nature of the contents of
manuscripts and, in particular, will recognize disclosure of its contents
might constitute an invasion of privacy if published or disclosed in any
manner. Some collections at History San José may be restricted in
whole or part. The patron is required to comply with these restrictions
as outlined by History San José staff.
By signing this agreement, the individual promises to abide by the
stated rules. If said individual is found in non-compliance of any of
rules, History San José reserves the right to refuse admittance to
the individual.
