History San José is proud to present the only San José performance of "Between Dirt and Sky", an original children's musical theater production inspired by the life of César Chávez. "The performance of "Between Dirt and Sky" is the highlight of a full ten days of exciting public programs for children, families, and adults", says Elaine Kauffman, Education Director of History San José. " We will explore the farm labor issue in historical context and offer children and their families the opportunity to meet the heroes who are part of our everyday lives."

The historical musical, "Between Dirt and Sky," is produced by the San Francisco Arts Education Project (ArtsEd), and premiered at San Francisco's Eureka Theater in February. The play was written by Chuck E. Gray and Lisa Quoresimo and relates the moving story of Chávez's life from his childhood in Arizona to his transformation into one of America's most inspiring civil rights leaders. In telling Chávez's story, the musical illuminates the struggle of the California migrant workers for equity and justice.

"First and foremost, the life of César Chávez is an integral part of the history of San José," says David Crosson, CEO of History San José. "Chávez's life provides the perfect opportunity to raise public discussion and provide historical context to one of the continuing issues of California's agricultural industry. That discussion must continue, and it is the perfect role for a historical organization like ours to assume."

The only San José public performance will be staged at the Mexican Heritage Plaza Theater, 1700 Alum Rock Avenue, at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, April 7th. Admission is $8.00 for adults, $6.00 for students, and $25 for a multi-generational family pass. Call 408.287.2290 during normal business hours for reservations. Seating is limited. The San José performances of "Between Dirt and Sky" are sponsored by Comcast Communications. It will culminate a week of programming in which History San José partners with the Mexican Heritage Plaza, Alum Rock School District, the Academic Film Archive of North America and others in exploring the impact and meaning of the life of César Chávez, who spent most of his teenage years in San José.
