History San José and the Mexican Heritage Plaza are pleased to present the only San José performance of Between Dirt and Sky: A Musical Based on the Life of César Chávez, an original children's musical theater production. Between Dirt and Sky is an original musical inspired by the life and work of César Chávez. It relates the moving story of Chávez's life from his childhood in Arizona to his transformation into one of America's most inspiring civil rights leaders. In telling Chávez's story, the musical illuminates the struggle of the California migrant workers for equity and justice. The musical is produced by the San Francisco Arts Education Project (ArtsEd), a nonprofit organization that places long-term artist residencies within San Francisco's public schools. One of ArtsEd's programs, the Event Players, recruits and trains talented 9 - 14 year old students in an after school musical theater program.

FAMILY DAY: EVERYDAY HEROES PAST & PRESENT
Sunday, April 10, 12:00-5:00 pm
History Park
Free!

Drawing from the life and works of Cesar Chavez, this program offers families the opportunity to meet the everyday heroes who make a difference in our lives. Visit many of the historic buildings in History Park and meet the following, several of whom speak Spanish:

  • San José Explorer Post 888, sponsored by the San José Fire Department, will be stationed at the Firehouse. The Explorers are young people between the ages of 14 and 20 who are considering the fire service as a career. This group will host "Turn Out Races". Children will have the opportunity to see, at the sound of a bell, how fast they can jump out of bed and put on firefighter pants, boots, suspenders, coat and hat, just like real firefighters do. The Explorers will also demonstrate this activity, including donning their breathing apparatus.
  • A retired schoolteacher will be in the one-room Santa Ana Schoolhouse. Visitors can sit at a desk, try writing on a slateboard and learn about the days when students of all ages learned together in one classroom.
  • The daughter of migrant farm workers and members of her family will be in the Stevens Ranch Fruit Barn. This woman remembers collecting food for the farmworkers who were on strike when she was in high school. She actually met Cesar Chavez when a group from her high school visited Delano.
  • A representative from the nonprofit organization, Village Harvest, will be located next to the museum's Umbarger Garden starting at 1:30 pm. Village Harvest, recognizing that backyard fruit trees often bear more fruit than a household can use, organizes and coordinates backyard fruit harvests and donates the harvested fruit to charitable food agencies. They provide education on fruit tree care and food preservation, and will be selling some of the jams they preserve. Village Harvest also participates in the "Plant a Row for the Hungry" program, which encourages people to donate surplus garden produce to local food banks, soup kitchens and other service organizations to help feed the hungry. They will hand out seeds and provide information on how to become a hero who feeds the hungry.
  • City Year San José Young Heroes will have an information booth on their program at the Pacific Hotel. The Young Heroes is a program for 6th to 8th graders who learn about the social issues in their community and then work together to solve those problems through hands-on community service three Saturdays a month from January to May.
  • Art Collector Leonard McKay will be stationed in the newly opened Leonard and David McKay Gallery at the Pasetta House to talk about the paintings he has collected by local artists that are on display there.
  • A former athlete from the San José State University track team will be in the Cheichi House to talk about civil rights issues of the 1960's and the challenges he faced at that time.
PLUS
  • Engine One-Half will be on display at the museum's Firehouse.
  • Craft activities for kids, such as making a nurse's cap at the Doctor's Office, painting a scene at the Pasetta House, and making knee pads to pick prunes at the Fruit Barn.
