- Description: Can label for Mt. Hamilton White Cherries, packed by the San Jose Fruit Packing Company. The label features an image of Lick Observatory on Mt. Hamilton, an iconic symbol of San Jose since it was built in the 1880s. The observatory is owned and operated by the University of California and is one of the most productive research observatories in the world. The San Jose Fruit Packing Company was founded in 1875 by Dr. James M. Denton and his son Thomas D. Denton. It was the first cannery in the Santa Clara Valley. SJFPC joined several other canneries to create the California Fruit Canners Association in 1899. In 1916 the Association merged with Central California Canneries, Griffen & Skelley, and the J.K. Armsby Company to become the California Packing Corporation. California Packing Corp. sold its products under a number of proprietary and distributive labels, including their premium brand, Del Monte. In June 1967, the company name was officially changed to the Del Monte Corporation.
