The 1876 map of the area around the Alameda and Stockton Avenue shows the diversity of activity in the neighborhood. Lenzen’s Subdivision is planned but was not executed. Charles Polhemus’ land is bisected by the Southern Pacific Railroad. Hester School opened its doors in 1861, named for Alameda resident and San Jose judge Craven P. Hester; the school closed in June 2004.
