Experience Adobe Days
Standards: SS 4.2.3, 4.2.5, 4.2.8; LA Listening & Speaking 1.3; Science 6B
Students will help with the daily chores of El Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe. They make an adobe brick, dip a candle, design a brand, rope a steer, card wool, weave, grind maiz, fry a tortilla, and make yerba buena tea. Once the work is done, students shoot marbles, spin a top and create a corn husk figure, then dress up in Californio clothing in front of Comisionado Peralta's adobe home, the oldest address in San José. Note: This guided program requires that chaperones run activity stations (training provided).
The Immigration Experience
Standards: SS 4.4.3, 4.4.4; LA Listening & Speaking 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.1a
History Park affords the opportunity for students to experience first-hand the cultures and lifestyles of several groups who have settled in the Valley. A visit may include going to the Ng Shing Gung Museum, Portuguese Historical Museum, Fruit Barn and Schoolhouse to expose students to the immigration experience, as well as compare and contrast artifacts and traditions of several different cultures.

Gold panning materials, copies of primary sources and activities in a curriculum resource binder help you create a gold rush program at your school. HSJ provides everything you need to pan for gold and a selection of photographs, maps, diaries and other documents that help tell the story of the California Gold Rush through the eyes and words of those who lived it.
School Days in the 1890's
Standards: SS 4.4.8; LA Reading 1.1; Writing 1.4; Listening & Speaking 1.1, 1.2
Students spend the morning in a restored one-room schoolhouse being taught as if they were attending in the 1890s. They figure a problem, practice their penmanship and read a page in the McGuffey Reader. At recess, they play "Mother May I" and other schoolyard games.
Valley of Heart's Delight
Standards: SS 4.1.3, 4.1.5, 4.4.3, 4.4.4, 4.4.5, 4.4.6; Science 6B, 6C
Students explore the agricultural history of the Santa Clara Valley by visiting the Stevens Ranch Fruit Barn. They'll learn about regional geography, ag labor and technology, land use and the canning industry. Activities include weighing fruit, designing a crate/can label, and viewing migrant farm worker houses.
Victorian Family Life
Docents visit your classroom to lead your students in discovering the daily life of a child during the 1880s. Touchable objects relate to
school, play and daily tasks.
