 Message from Director

Welcome to History San José, Santa Clara Valley’s largest and most comprehensive historical organization.

Today’s Silicon Valley did not just burst unannounced into the world in the 1970s. It is a product of the Valley of Heart’s Delight before, and the Valley of the Oaks before that. This small Valley that daily redefines the future of the world is, and has been from the beginning, a product of its past.

The history that we make everyday would not be possible without the futures that others created yesterday. History San José’s intent is that this web site will become the place where you can go to understand the genesis and genius of Silicon Valley, over all of those centuries, in a single stop.

Like the Valley in which we live, HSJ and this web site are in a constant state of transformation and will offer a different landscape every time you visit. Over time this will become the portal to our vast collections and your single access point to Santa Clara Valley’s long, rich, and multitextured historical tapestry. You may discover the largest and oldest collection of Spanish and Mexican municipal documents in the state of California. Or you may explore the huge Perham Collection of pre-transistor electronics, select among A. P. Hill’s magnificent photographs of redwoods in the Santa Cruz Mountains, or locate your home on 200 year-old maps. Once you have visited, you will want to return often. And be sure to let us know how we can serve you better. After all, History San José is all about you.
